Matthew Thistlewood (Music Director) studied music at Goldsmiths' College, University of London and the Royal Academy of Music and was taught the tuba by John Fletcher, James Gourlay and Patrick Harrild. He freelances with orchestras and ensembles throughout South Wales and the west of England and is also principal tuba with Thames Fanfare Brass, London.

Matthew has directed CCVG Symphonic Brass since 1993 and has been the music director of a number of other ensembles including the Wind Orchestra of the Royal Welsh College Music & Drama's Junior Department. In 2008 he stepped down as Music Director of CCVG High Schools' Wind Band after an association of 15 years.

As well as teaching privately, Matthew often works as a brass coach with various youth orchestras and bands, including the National Childrens' Orchestra, National Scout & Guide Symphony Orchestra and National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales.

In 2005 Matthew joined National Youth Arts Wales as Youth Music Development Manager overseeing the activities of various national ensembles including the National Youth Brass Band of Wales and National Youth Choir of Wales.
